Once upon a time, long long ago ........ Sorry sorry, just a year back, if someone said Tamil movies will directly come to your home, we smiled & some laughed that this will never happen. But we all knew that this will eventually happen but will take years to come. 2020 the year everything changed, with the pandemic, theaters were closed and we were sitting in lockdown and that pandemic made that long time shrink like a short commercial ad. OTT Platforms are going to be a big game-changer especially for us Kollywood fans.
IS OTT A THREAT FOR THEATERS?
Not necessarily, as audience, we are very choosy what to watch and what not to on theaters and it's not every movie that releases, in theaters even the critically acclaimed films have crippled and failed to draw profits, that's where the OTT platforms come in. As a mass audience, we will definitely watch a big star's movie in theaters especially on festival days but some small and some few big films might suffer to find a release date or bring the audience in but if that small film is released on an OTT platform, it will bring the profit for the producer and wider reach if the promotions are done well. Theaters and OTT can co-exist, we hope one day that the theater owners will realize this and accept it. We see in Bollywood that they have a Hybrid release where the film gets released in OTT Platforms and theaters. As far as Ktown is concerned, until the theater owners come to a realization it's wouldn't be possible in Kollywood.
WHY THE DISAPPOINTMENT IN FANS FOR OTT RELEASE?
The disappointment in the fans are justified any fan would want to watch their idol on the big screen and celebrate it but we as a fan should also try to understand the Business behind it, it's not everyone that can keep a finished film for a long time with the interest rate going up and up. With so many films yet to release the production company struggles to find a perfect day to release their films that's when they decide to go for a direct OTT release, it's understandable that some films are made for the theaterical experience but eventually cinema is a business! "Showbiz". With OTT the film might get a wider reach than what it might have gotten in theaters across the world We should try to accept the decision made by the makers and enjoy the film despite how it releases.
WHAT TO EXPECT FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR?
With already exciting platforms Aha is launching its Tamil version as Aha Tamil very soon and just like Sun Tv, Kalaingar Tv is in talks to launch their own platform but the biggest question is will the price be affordable? Recently Amazon Prime had increased their price to 1499 from 999 for annual plans we will have to wait and see. From what he has heard in the coming year of 2022 we will be getting lots of OTT releases. Amazon Prime and Netflix want to give tough competition in the Indian market so they have planned to at least release 2 big releases monthly mainly Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi languages are the target, with this plan only can they compensate for the last term loss they faced. We hope that these platforms choose some amazing movies,. content-oriented like Hotstar's latest releases Lift and Oh Manapenne.
